Signs of a cable or track problem
A door hanging crooked in the opening, a cable dangling or wrapped loosely around the drum, grinding or popping as the door moves, or a door that jams part-way — all point to cables, rollers, or track. Frayed cables rarely snap without warning: you'll see broken strands, rust, or unraveling near the bottom bracket weeks before failure.
Don't keep running the opener. Each cycle with a slack cable lets the door climb further off its tracks, turning a $150 repair into panel damage.
What the repair involves
Lift cables sit under the same tension as the springs, so the door is clamped and the spring tension safely released before any cable comes off. We replace both cables (they wear as a pair), re-seat the door in its tracks, reset the drums so both sides lift evenly, and check every roller and hinge that took stress in the failure.
Bent track sections get straightened or replaced and the brackets re-anchored — a door that jumped its track once will do it again if the cause isn't fixed. Typical visit: 60–90 minutes.
Roller upgrades worth doing while we're there
Builder-grade steel rollers get loud and flat-spotted after 8–10 years. Sealed 13-ball nylon rollers cost little, cut the noise dramatically, and don't need the constant lubrication steel demands — a popular upgrade for bedrooms above the garage. Near the coast, we also recommend galvanized cables, which resist the salt-air corrosion that kills standard cables early.

Straight answers to common questions
My door is crooked and stuck half-open — what happened?
A lift cable, drum, roller or spring problem may have left one side unsupported. Do not force the door up or down; keep people clear and request service.
Can I just push the door back onto its tracks?
Please don't. The rollers bind against the track lip under the door's full weight, and doors have dropped on people trying to lever them back in. The tension has to come off the system first, which takes clamps and winding bars.
How long do garage door cables last?
About 8–12 years inland, and often just 5–7 near the coast where salt air corrodes the strands. If you can see rust or fraying at the bottom of the cable, replace it now — it's a cheap part protecting a heavy door.
Why did my door come off its tracks?
The usual causes: a snapped or slack cable, a bumper tap from a car, worn rollers popping out, or loose track brackets. We fix the root cause, not just the symptom, so it doesn't repeat.
